Please join us for our opening reception on Sunday afternoon, July 13 from 1:00-4:00.
Light refreshments will be served at this lovely river-view venue.
As a West Coast teen, Jay was attracted early on to the artistry
behind the work of Mort Drucker, Rick Griffin, and other
underground cartoonists. He recognized their contribution to
figure drawing, character development, and social commentary.
Jay has written a handful of books, with an eye toward developing
his burgeoning Cast o’ Characters. Numbering in the hundreds,
these characters display a multitude of human behaviors. His
non-fiction and fictional works delve into issues of social and
ethical justice, all under one ol’ illustrator’s guarded optimism.
Pirates: His study of Chesapeake Bay history led him directly to global piracy and the resulting international repercussions.
Prisoners: His quirky Leavenworth Lifers Prison Baseball Organization belies an undercurrent of severe economic & sociocultural challenges.
Plowboys: Set in the parched sand dunes of the Panhandle region of west Texas, he takes us on a trip into the netherworld of the dispossessed farmers seeking both a steady job and self-respect.
Raised largely in Maryland, Ms. Callen attended college at the University of Maryland, graduating with degrees totally unrelated to art! After working in several positions in MD and VA, she joined the foreign service to serve in many developing countries in Africa, the former Soviet bloc, and the Caribbean. Always interested in art of all sorts everywhere, she studied art on weekends while in Haiti.
After retirement, she studied art in both N. VA and S. MD, since she was resident in both for years. Recognizing a dearth of teachers, she started putting classes together for local colleges and senior centers and has enjoyed teaching in Southern MD while continuing to paint and show art in oils, watercolor, acrylic and pastels.
Current member of Calvert Artists’ Guild; Color and Light Society of Southern Maryland; St. Mary’s County Arts Council Gallery, Leonardtown, MD; and Mattawoman Creek Art Center, Marbury, MD.
Soon after relocating to gorgeous southern Maryland, I became interested in the history of the Chesapeake Bay. This study led me directly to global piracy and the resulting international repercussions.
Two of my paintings of the Leavenworth Lifers, my fictional prison baseball team from the Depression era, were recently selected to be shown for the summer at the Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Art Center. The show was curated by Keri A. Towler, the Director of Collections at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

'The artworks she selected highlight themes, ideas, items and cultural touchstones that we all have a connection to. Many of the works in this show are colorful and fun but that does not mean that they are not also serious or responding to complicated social issues.'
This project picks up after the
climax of 'The Oath'.
With the setting located in the parched sand dunes of the Panhandle region of west Texas, we take a trip into the netherworld of the dispossessed farmers seeking both a steady job and self-respect.
The show was up for two weekends in June.
Jay enjoyed showing at this local gallery in
North Beach, Maryland.
The photos below were taken at the Leavenworth Lifers reception, an art show capturing a lively fictional Dust Bowl baseball team. It was a delight to hear Jay talk about his work and share the backstories of some of his beloved characters. The baseball themed refreshments were a festive and delicious compliment to the show, as well.
Oh dear! There they were at The Winery in January!

It was a great 2024. Teaching classes, connecting with other creative people, getting recognized, selling work, winning awards, and planning the publication of three more books based on the characters and images you see shown here and below. Watch this space! And keep an eye on my social media posts!

'Through the teachings of Andrew Loomis, he learned that figure-drawing was a key element to many avenues related to pop-imagery and the storytelling process. The use of a more dramatic color palette is in keeping with the comic book tradition. Consequently, his subject matter ventures into issues related to ethnicity, economics, power-relationships, and a host of other social issues… all with a quirky, sideways grin from the left-hander’s perspective'
